Artifical Intelligence and Machine Learning for YOUR Learners in School

Explore incorporating AI and ML into your school - for both administrative tasks and into lessons as a teaching resource.

This workshop helps teachers how to teach learners about AI and Machine Learning, using tools such as Machine learning for kids, in IT or coding lessons.

Expose learners to how Ai is being used in different real-life situations already.

Explore how  AI is used in education

Investigate how would AI be of benefit to the teacher in the classroom?

Why AI would assist the administration department of a school?

What do you think of using facial recognition in schools?

Do you think Emotion AI would be useful in schools?

Why should schools not ignore AI?

Assessment AI.png

Assessment and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ideas for teachers (FP, IP, SP, FET)

This workshop is aimed at  encouraging teachers to explore and consider using AU tools to assist them and save them time.

Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, we investigate the history of Artificial Intelligence (AI), what it is AI and the various types of AI tools.

What is assessment?

We investigate what assessment is and teaching strategies for using online / e-Assessments, and inspect the reasons for assessments created with AI. Investigate Google Forms as a machine-learning tool

Investigate and explore the usefulness of AI for assessment tasks, ways in which children use AI for school, and how teachers are building AI into assessment tasks

A few AI assessment tools are explored in an Interactive, hands-on approach, and how teachers could use them to build assessment tasks, rubrics, tests and examinations

We explore AI and plagiarism, ways to avoid AI plagiarism by creating assessment tasks which don’t use AI.

Investigate AI checkers, and their accuracy and discuss why teachers need to be discerning.

Finally, investigate the importance of considering ethics, values and AI. Explore the value of the foundations of AI systems to work for the good of humanity, individuals, societies and the environment. Investigate AI bias, Africa and how South African teachers can help address the bias.

Investigate whether a school is ready for AI and the need for a school AI policy

Conclude by reminding teachers and encouraging them to be responsible AI users.

Why your school needs an AI policy

Explore your school needs an AI policy - deliberate whether or not to allow learners to use AI. How teachers would use AI. Define scope and purpose in relation to learners ( learners’ abilities, differences and age), staff and existing school policies.Address privacy and security, align to POPIA and ensure learners' data is protected.

Describe ethical guidelines, and the use of AI in the classroom and responsible use. Include being polite when using AI.

Create environment for continuous learning about AI technology, benefits, limitations and risks. Assess AI-generated content of teachers and learners.

Promote the evaluation of AI tools. Provide guidelines on how to assess the AI tools.

Provide a digital space where the AI evaluations can be reported and accessed by staff members.

Ensure inclusive and accessible AI support for learners with disabilities and provide individual learning.

The AI Policy should align with your school's existing policy and needs to be updated regularly

AI in education - free resource

A crowdsourced collection
Edited by Chrissi Nerantzi, Sandra Abegglen, Marianna Karatsiori & Antonio Martínez-Arboleda

I, Karen Walstra, was one of the contributors.

About this collection: Educators are currently filled with rollercoaster emotions and reactions.
There is a lot of excitement and fear in the air about the use of AI in education. A range of perspectives and positions are currently shared openly and widely in publications and panel discussions.
This collection captures where we are at this moment in time with our collective thinking about potential alternative uses and applications of AI that could make a real difference and potentially create new learning, development and opportunities for our students and educators, for all of us. The collection is based on an open invitation to all educators and
students to share ideas on how AI tools such as ChatGPT, DALL·E 2, and Midjourney, for example, could be used in inventive ways for learning,
teaching and scholarship. We are mindful of the importance of critical and ethical use of AI in
education settings and more generally.
Thank you for all the contributions from authors across 19 countries: Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy,
Ireland, Jordan, Liberia, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom and the US.
The collection is made available as an Open Educational Resource (OER) via the #creativeHE website, Zenodo and further platforms. As the

collection is made available under the Creative Commons License CC-BY-NC-SA, anybody can use the collection as open data to further interrogate the use of AI in Education. Please share any resulting further outcomes with the editorial team and the wider community.

_AI Leadership, Strategic Planning and Artificial Intelligence [AI] in Schools (1).jpg

Leadership, Strategic Planning and Artificial Intelligence [AI] in Schools For school leaders and teachers
(FP, IP, SP and FET)

This workshop empowers school leaders and teachers to become informed decision-makers regarding the strategic integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within their educational context. Participants will critically evaluate their school's readiness for AI adoption, considering both the potential benefits and the need for proactive planning to address challenges. Central to this process is a careful examination of ethical considerations surrounding AI, ensuring that its use upholds values of fairness, transparency, and responsibility.

The workshop will guide participants in aligning AI integration with their school's unique vision, and strategic plan. This alignment is important in a world shaped by the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the rapid changes it brings – ensuring that AI serves as a tool to enhance learning experiences and prepare students for an increasingly technology-driven future.

Key focus areas included are:

Understanding the fundamentals of AI, its different applications, and the implications for the education sector.

Assessing the school's current technological infrastructure, staff competencies, and overall change readiness.

Exploring the ethical dimensions of AI, including concerns about bias, privacy, and the potential impact on learner-teacher relationships.

Developing a collaborative approach to AI implementation, involving teachers, students, parents, and the broader community.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of AI's potential, developed a critical lens for evaluating AI tools, and begun crafting a roadmap for responsible and impactful AI integration within their school.

The art of prompting

In this workshop about the art of prompting, as teachers, we'll investigate creating relevant prompts to meet our needs and  wants for AI to assist each individual effectively.

Explore how as teachers our prompts can assist in dismantling bias. We’ll investigate responsive learning, sparking creativity, critical thinking, and deeper learning with innovative prompt-writing techniques for the South African classrooms. Fill in the blanks! Explore crafting prompts as a South African Teacher, in relation to AI bias.

Creating prompts to empower South African learners by prompting for deeper learning and assisting in dismantling bias. We’ll explore crafting prompts that challenge Eurocentrism bias, celebrate African voices, and engage diverse perspectives.
